Thomas W. Tierney, Esq., a partner in the law firm of Rossway Swan, and newly elected President of the Notre Dame Club of Greater Vero Beach, announces the students beginning and returning to the University of Notre Dame (ND) and St. Mary’s College (SMC) for the 2014-2015 term.
The club conducts an annual student send-off event each year. This year’s event was held on Wednesday, August 13 at the River Club. More than 70 club members and their families turned out to greet the young alums and send the students back to campus in style.
As President, Tierney, a Notre Dame graduate (1987), introduced the students, their year in school and their majors. “We are extremely proud of each of these students, so bright and eager, with tremendous futures ahead of them.” The feted students included: Jason Wassel (guest from Pittsburgh), ND Senior, Computer Science; Gabriela Portman, ND Freshman, Biochemistry; Ian Mackett, ND Junior, Aerospace Engineering; Heather Fredrickson, ND Junior, Computer Science; Rachel Rahal, SMC Junior, Communications; Jack Gorman, ND Junior, Mechanical Engineering; and Lizzy Rahal, SMC Freshman, Nursing.
The Notre Dame Club of Greater Vero Beach, now in its sixteenth year of activity, includes over 100 alumni, students, parents and friends of Notre Dame. For its service to the Homeless Family Center (HFC), the Club has been honored several times by the Notre Dame Alumni Association, most recently in April, when Notre Dame’s Head Football Coach Brian Kelly visited Vero Beach to honor the local club. The club also serves HFC through support of a Summer Service Student, fund raising, and member participation on the Board of Directors. Club members have also been involved in the expansion of Our Lady of Guadalupe Mission Church and the building of a multipurpose building on the mission property in Fellsmere serving a predominantly Hispanic Catholic parish. The Club also maintains a Scholarship Fund to help support area students with financial need in their pursuit of a Notre Dame degree.
